About Wavulpane (Wawulpane) Cave

Wavulpane Cave, also known as the Limestone Bat Cave, is Sri Lanka’s largest and most spectacular dripstone cave, estimated to be around 500 million years old. Located in the lush foothills of the Rakwana mountain range, it features impressive stalactites and stalagmites, a hidden underground waterfall, and a vast colony of bats. The cave is a natural wonder and a must-visit for adventurers and nature lovers interested in geology and wildlife.

Location

Wavulpane Cave is situated near Pallebedda in the Sabaragamuwa Province, approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Udawalawa. It lies within a protected forest reserve and is surrounded by rich biodiversity.

Best Times to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon visits are recommended for comfortable weather and better wildlife activity. The cave is dark and can be slippery, so bring a strong torch or headlamp, wear sturdy footwear, and be prepared for some trekking through forest paths.
