About Udawalawa National Park

Udawalawa National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife destinations, especially renowned for its large population of elephants. Spread across vast grasslands and scrub jungle, this park is home to a variety of wildlife, including water buffalo, crocodiles, deer, peacocks, and over 200 species of birds. It is a top pick for wildlife photographers and nature lovers. A safari here offers a memorable opportunity to see wild animals up close in their natural habitat.

Location

Udawalawa National Park is located in the southern part of Sri Lanka, spanning the boundaries of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces. The park lies just a short drive away from many local accommodations including the Imperial Resort Udawalawe.

Things to See

A visit to Udawalawa promises unforgettable moments, especially the sight of majestic elephants bathing, feeding, or roaming in herds. In addition to elephants, you might spot jackals, mongooses, wild boars, and even the occasional leopard if lucky. The park’s vast Udawalawa Reservoir is a central feature, providing water to the park and attracting many animals to its shores. Early morning or late afternoon safaris offer the best chances to see wildlife in action. Don’t forget your binoculars – this is also a paradise for birdwatchers, especially during migratory seasons.

Safari jeeps can be arranged easily through your resort or at the park entrance. Each safari typically lasts 3 to 4 hours, and local guides provide excellent insights into the animals and their habitats.

Best Times to Visit

The dry season from May to September is ideal for safaris as animals are more likely to gather around waterholes. Early morning safaris (starting around 6:00 AM) are particularly recommended for the best wildlife sightings.
