About Sankhapala Raja Maha Viharaya

Sankhapala Raja Maha Viharaya is a revered ancient Buddhist temple located in the southern part of Sri Lanka. Nestled at the base of a rocky outcrop, this temple is believed to have been founded during the reign of King Dutugemunu (2nd century BC) and later became the meditative retreat of Venerable Pimburatiya Thera, a royal general-turned-monk. The temple is known for its spiritual ambiance, scenic surroundings, and historical significance, drawing both pilgrims and casual travelers.

Location

The temple is located in Pallebedda, close to the Udawalawe area. It’s a short and scenic drive from nearby towns and tourist accommodations, including Imperial Resort Udawalawe.
