About Maduwanwela Walawwa

Maduwanwela Walawwa is a historic manor house (walawwa) located in the southern part of Sri Lanka, offering a fascinating glimpse into the island’s colonial and feudal past. Originally built in the 1700s and expanded in the 19th century by Maduwanwela Maha Disawe, a powerful local chieftain during the British era, the walawwa once had over 100 rooms. Today, about 43 rooms remain, preserved as a museum that showcases the grandeur, lifestyle, and governance of the local elite during colonial times. It’s a hidden gem for history lovers and those interested in Sri Lankan heritage.
