About Ridiyagama Safari Park

Ridiyagama Safari Park is Sri Lanka’s first-ever open-air zoo and safari-style wildlife park, offering a unique safari experience in a controlled yet natural environment. Opened in 2016 and managed by the Department of National Zoological Gardens, the park covers 500 acres and is home to a wide variety of animals including lions, tigers, zebras, elephants, giraffes, ostriches, and more. Visitors can enjoy a safe, educational, and exciting safari without entering a wilderness area—making it an ideal outing for families and groups.

Location

The safari park is located in Ridiyagama, near Ambalantota in the Hambantota District of southern Sri Lanka. It’s easily reachable from the southern expressway and nearby towns like Hambantota and Udawalawe.

Things to See

Ridiyagama Safari Park is divided into separate zones, including:

African Lion Zone – where you can see majestic lions up close.

Sri Lankan Elephant Zone – housing native elephants in a semi-wild environment.

World Herbivore Zone – featuring animals like zebras, giraffes, and deer.

The safari is conducted in specialized buses or safari jeeps, which take visitors through each zone, providing close-up views and photo opportunities. Interpretive guides onboard offer information about the animals, their behavior, and conservation efforts. A visitor center and small food court are also available within the premises.

Best Times to Visit

The park is open daily, typically from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Early morning or late afternoon visits are best for comfortable weather and active animal sightings. Weekdays are quieter and offer a more personal experience.
